Samson Motors has joined the race to have the first flying cars in the sky. They will be entering the market with the world’s first 200 mph (320km/h) flying sports car, named Switchblade. The Switchblade can fly up to an altitude of 13,000 feet and at a top speed of 200 mph. It is also fitted with a safety parachute. Samson Motors has claimed that the car will be ready for launch in the spring 2018 with a starting price of $120,000.

The Switchblade prototype is a three-wheel car, designed by Oregon based Samson Motors. The car is a two-seater and has a length of 5.1 meters. It also has extendable wings and a retractable tail that can fold and extends the car length to 6.2 meters. That implies the car can be used on road and in air both.

On the ground, the Switchblade is said to have a top speed of 100 mph, however, when it flies it can hit 200 mph. Unlike verticle takeoff and landing vehicles (VTOL), the Switchblade cannot take off directly from the road. It needs to be flown from regular airports. A spokesperson for Samson said, “You can drive the Switchblade to any public airport to take off and may land at the same or any other public airport.”

“If you have privileges, you can also take off and land to any private airport.” In terms of engine, the Switchblade is powered by a 190bhp liquid-cooled 1.6-litre V4 engine which can give the car a range of around 450 miles from a 113-liter fuel tank.

While the current version uses unleaded petrol, Samson is already looking ahead to other fuel options. The Samson spokesperson added: “We have already finished layouts for both hybrid and electric drive systems pending on an appropriate battery solution.” The car is equipped with various features including a sound system, reversing camera and a digital instrument display.

There are many safety features also included in the car including parachute for the whole car, rollover protection, and crumple zones in the front and rear. Three versions of the cars exist – the Snowbird for colder climates, the Trek for heavy-duty landing, the Aurora which is a hybrid of Trek and Snowbird.

Samson says that the prices of the cars will start from $120,000. But it is not quite as simple as buying the car and setting out for a journey. You also need to own a private pilot’s license to fly it and a full driving license to operate it on the roads.

Due to its classification as an experimental or homebuilt vehicle, US laws dictate that 51 percent of the vehicle must be built by the owner. Thankfully, Samson says that this can be completed in three weeks at a Samson Build Assist Centre.

Samson is in a race with more than a dozen European and US firms. Each with its own science fiction-inspired vision for creating a new form of urban transport that is a cross between a driverless electric car and a short-hop, vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. These include aerospace giant Airbus which aims to put a self-piloting taxi in the air by 2020. Kitty Hawk, a company backed by Google co-founder Larry Page and Uber, which is working with partners on its own flying taxi strategy.

Some 150 North Koreans have left Angola. In Qatar, the contracts of some 650 construction workers will expire next year. Poland, where as many as 500 have laboured, will not renew work permits.

The head of a Russian parliamentary delegation visiting North Korea this week said "everything" must be done to allow those who have already received work permits to finish their jobs in Russia, where an expert estimates around 30,000 live.

- Cold basements -

In Mongolia, construction companies have hired North Koreans for their reputation for working long hours without complaint.

They live in toolsheds of construction sites or in the basements of apartment projects. They never take time off or even leave the construction sites as they are not allowed to wander in the city on their own.

In September, a 27-year-old North Korean worker died after falling from an apartment in a residential complex under construction in Ulaanbaatar.

At the fenced-off site, AFP journalists saw three toolsheds with a clothes line strung between them. The workers angrily refused to talk to the reporters and tried to grab their cameras.

A South Korean Christian activist who has sought to help North Koreans said he wished that Mongolians would do more for those who work in poor conditions.

"In winter most of them live in the basement of the building that they are building. There is no heating in that unfinished building," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"Unfortunately, it is too risky for South Koreans to help those workers directly. I used to help some of construction workers in the past, through one man. But one day, that man just disappeared. I never saw him again."

- Begging to stay -

Conditions at Mongolia's garment factories have also faced scrutiny.

But more than 100 North Koreans left Gobi Cashmere, Mongolia's biggest cashmere factory, after their contracts ended in August.

"We hired North Koreans because of a lack of Mongolians skilled in operating garment machines," the company's lawyer, Tsogtbayariin Tsaschiker, told AFP.

"The South Korean press publishes false stories that the companies pay North Koreans with shirts, not money. We paid them exactly the same salary as we pay our Mongolian workers and they work eight hours like the Mongolian workers. They used to receive their salary through Mongolian banks."

North Koreans are also renowned for their skills in traditional Korean medicine, including acupuncture and chiropractic care.

The facilities send their salaries to the North Korean embassy, which then pays the staff. The embassy declined to comment.

The acupuncturists and chiropractors have better conditions than the construction workers as their food and apartments are provided by the clinics.

Sunjidmaa Mitiya, chief doctor at Sky, a private traditional medicine hospital, said her two North Korean employees attract many customers.

"Patients always have high satisfaction with their treatment and more patients come to our clinic thanks to the good results see by other clients," Mitiya said.

"They work from their heart, and they are happy to work in Mongolia," she said. "The previous doctor... begged the clinic to hire him again after his contract ended."

The Governments of Britain and the United States of America, have cautioned their citizens dwelling or intending to visit Abuja, that terrorist groups are threatening to carry out bomb attacks in the Nigeria’s capital city during the Yuletide.
This most recent guidance to British nationals was made by the nation's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, FCO.

FCO said that around 117,000 British citizens visit Nigeria every year.

Additionally, the US Government cautioned its subjects not to go to Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe , Jigawa and Yobe till the finish of the year.

FCO wrote on its official website, “The risk of terrorist attack increases around religious festivals; so (the threat alert) will be elevated in the run-up to and throughout the Christmas and New Year holiday period.

“Terrorist groups have threatened to conduct bombings and attacks in the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja ) area during this period.

“You (British nationals) should avoid places where crowds gather, including religious gatherings and places of worship, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, transport hubs and camps for displaced people.

A week ago, the United States Embassy in Nigeria issued a similar warning entitled, “Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Holiday Security Reminder.”

Saying, “The US Mission urges all US citizens to exercise caution in and around shopping centres, malls, markets, hotels , places of worship, restaurants, bars, and other places where crowds gather in and around the Federal Capital Territory, from now through the Christmas and New Year ’s holiday season.

“Terrorist groups have threatened to conduct bombings and attacks in this area during this period.

“The US Mission remains concerned about potential attacks in the states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa and Yobe. Travellers are urged to avoid those states through the end of the year.

“Review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates . Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.”
